THE BLACK ETHNONYM

In the mid-1960s

The Black American ethnic group named ourselves Black. Black as a proper noun means; The Americans of the Black Laws and Codes. These laws and codes were written to persecute and document our existence.  


Black American - North American ethnogenesis in the portion of land that would  later become The United States of America. The Americans of the Black Laws and  Codes with a documented existence under the names; Negro, Slaves, Black, Free  People of Color, Mulatto, Creole, Gullah Geechee, Colored, Afro-American, and African  American. The category Black American includes individuals who identify with any  of the foundational populations in the U.S. prior to 1865. This includes peoples and  groups that identify as Freed Blacks, American Freedmen, American Descendants of  Slavery, Foundational Black Americans, etc.
